Former Bowie State University basketball player is receiving support from his teammates and coaches after being diagnosed with Stage 3 sarcoma cancer.
No. 22, Rasheem King, has been a fighter all his life and on the court was no different.
“He was a terrific defender and he always wanted to guard the best guy.” Bowie State University head coach Darrell Brooks told Fox 5 News.
Seen by his teammates as talented, kind and humorous, one would not know how much Rasheem has already been through. Due to his mom’s early passing at the age of two and his dad barely being in the picture, Rasheem was raised by his maternal grandparents, who are both now dead.
“Some people get handed a lot early on and it makes them tougher people,” said head athletic trainer Kaitlyn D’Annibale.
Now being diagnosed with cancer Rasheem will receive a little help from his second family of fellow athletes and coaches. His team is raising money online and at Saturday’s Bowie State basketball game to assist Rasheem with his fight with cancer.
“I would like to say thank you,” said Rasheem. “Thank you for all the support. Thank you for the donations. Thank you for the prayers.”
Rasheem plans to beat the cancer and has goals to get back on the basketball court.
“I’m going to keep fighting,” Rasheem said. “This is just temporary. It’s going to make me stronger.”
