I had the honor to “Stand With Rand” as U.S. Senator Rand Paul announced to the world that he is seeking the office of President of the United States, and I think it is time we give him more than a serious look.
Over the last 5 plus years, Senator Paul has not only put forth a black agenda. He made the black agenda his agenda. For example, Dr. Rand Paul was the first major politician to speak out against what happened in Ferguson, Mo and, to this day, is the only major 2016 contender to actually visit the area and meet with the residents and listen to their stories. In addition, he has proposed legislation that would put body cameras on every single police officer in America with his C.A.M.E.R.A.S act with federal funding to back it.
One of the primary principles of conservatism is that the proper role of the government is to protect your rights, especially when it comes to dealing with agents of the government.
Rand Paul is actively working to make sure that Black America has those same levels of protections when dealing with agents of the government.
Senator Paul understands that there are two Americas, and he would like to fix that.
He has proposed legislation that would restore the voting rights of convicted felons who have been convicted of non-violent crimes. We all know the damage the “War on Drugs” has done to our community, and Senator Paul has boldly proclaimed that any law that disproportionately effects the Black community should be repealed, and he would work to repeal them as POTUS.
We have seen the effect that police brutality has had on our community, and Senator Paul has been active in addressing it when it happens, not just when it is politically okay. He also understands the role that economic development and education opportunities play in the development of the black community.
While Senator Paul will never get to truly experience what it means to be Black in America, he is the only 2016 contender that has made a deliberate, conscious effort to understand it and do everything they can to make it better. We have grown up in an age of Jena 6, Oscar Grant, Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, Eric Gardner, and Walter Scott; and Senator Paul has put forth a plan to help make sure our sons, brothers, and fathers never have to experience this again.
There will be many that will come to ask for our vote on their time at their liking, but there was only one that showed up when it mattered most to us as a community, and because of that Senator Paul deserves more than an honest look; he deserves our support in 2016.
