The fourth annual Community Prayer Breakfast takes place at 8:30 a.m. on at the Albert E. and Sadie B. Smith Conference Center at Florida Memorial University, 15800 NW 42nd Ave., in Miami Gardens. The cost is $12 per person or $80 for a party of eight.
The event includes various speakers such as U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Shultz, chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee.
The annual breakfast also features the Rev. Gary V. Simpson of Concord Baptist Church in Brooklyn. The historical church, which has partnered with Habitat for Humanity to provide homes for needy families, was once led by pastors who were slaves in the 1700’s.
Simpson’s church focuses on issues that affect many black communities such as violence, HIV and poor education. In 2006 he helped launch the Concord Financial Literacy Series as an effort to educate others on tackling financial hardships.
