Norfolk State football signee Dy-Shawn Simpkins Jr., who enrolled in January, was killed in a shooting near his native East Orange, N.J., on Friday, the school announced Saturday.

Simpkins, 18, was reportedly found unresponsive with gunshot wounds inside a vehicle alongside another man, who later died at a hospital.

Simpkins played last season at Jireh Prep in Mathews, N.C., as a post-graduate after a standout career at Paramus (N.J.) Catholic High. He was one of NSU coach Latrell Scott’s first three signees in the 2017 recruiting class, and participated in the Spartans’ spring workouts.

“On behalf of our administration, coaches and student-athletes, we want to express our condolences to Dy-Shawn’s family,” NSU athletic director Marty Miller said in a statement. “He will be dearly missed by the entire Norfolk State University family.”
