Hampton Professor Shonda Buchanan Says She’s ‘Not Your Mom,’ But She Cares About Her Student’s Success

Classes are underway, and Shonda Buchanan is ready to share some major keys to success.

Buchanan is quite the busy woman, she is a poet, author, and she teaches English at HBCU Hampton University in Virginia.

She talked with The Hampton Roads Show about poetry, her several upcoming projects, and more. When asked what it means to her to be teaching at a black college, Buchanan said:

“I’ve been at Hampton for twelve years, I love the population, I love the heritage and the history of the university, I love the ability to go to emancipation tree and take my class there and to hold a poetry class under emancipation tree.”

She added:

“I tell my students, ‘of course, you know, this is supposedly the first place where the Emancipation Proclamation was read.’ So it kinda seeps into them.”

Buchanan also admitted that she is like a mom. But she ensures students that she is there on campus at Hampton–in rain, sleet or snow–to help students help themselves.

Buchanan tells students that “I’m not your mom but I’m a person who cares about your success in my classroom, and the university.”
