It’s the fact that both of his parents attended an HBCU, and that’s in part of the reason why he is giving back for me. His mother went to historically black Grambling State University, and his father went to Prairie View A&M University, a historically black college in Texas.

From Billboard:

“Travis Scott has pledged to pay a semester’s tuition for five students attending historically black colleges and universities in a series of tweets on Wednesday night (Oct. 7).

Travis Scott pledged to pay a semester’s tuition for five students attending historically black colleges and universities in a series of tweets on Wednesday night (Oct. 7). The decision appeared to be a spontaneous one, after a string of tweets from fans in which they asked Scott to help them replace everything from their Airpods to their house, a PS5 and an Astroworld hoodie that was misplaced at one of his shows.

But then Travis had a better idea. “AND I KNOW SCHOOL JUST STARTED AND I WANNA TAKE CARE OF 5 KIDS TUITION FOR THERE FIRST SEMESTER OF SCHOOL !!! WHY NOT!!!!!” he tweeted, following up with a tweet clarifying that his offer is good for students who attend one of the nation’s more than 100 HBCUs.

The rapper asked fans to send him information about their schools, noting that his mother went to Grambling State University, an HBCU in Louisiana, and his dad went to Prairie View A&M University in Texas. Pretty soon a young man named Nasire Branch shared his dream of going to Morehouse College and Scott had the perfect answer. “My mom always wanted me to go here.!!!! So I got u bro !!! Just lock in and come out of there ready to change the world,” he wrote back.

Then a second student, Taylor Ivy, a freshman marketing student at Howard University, sent her bid in and the floodgates just opened up. Scott has a lot to celebrate, since he recently scored his third No. 1 debut on the Hot 100 in less than a year with “Franchise,” which features Young Thug and M.I.A.
