Shannon Sharpe North Carolina A&T is now a public dispute, and only one side has spoken so far. Sharpe says Nightcap’s planned live broadcast from A&T’s 100th homecoming is off after about 10 weeks of planning, according to HBCU Sports. The show had promoted a Thursday afternoon broadcast from Greensboro. North Carolina A&T hadn’t publicly responded to his claims in the reports reviewed Thursday.
Shannon Sharpe North Carolina A&T: What Sharpe Says Happened
Sharpe told Nightcap listeners the plans unraveled when new requests surfaced late. He said guests such as faculty, coaches, cheerleaders, or Greek organization members would have required fees. That isn’t how the show works on other campuses, he said. “At some point in time, it’s just not worth it,” he said, per HBCU Sports. The show planned a two-hour window, from 1 to 3 p.m., according to Sharpe.
He also alleged that university representatives placed restrictions on student participation. That included possible disciplinary consequences for students who appeared without authorization, HBCU Gameday reported. Gameday noted that the exact fees and their amounts haven’t been independently established.
The band became another sticking point. Sharpe said the Blue and Gold Marching Machine first emailed that it couldn’t wait to take part. Later, his team heard the band had a previous engagement. He questioned that explanation for homecoming weekend. He also suggested availability might change with a donation. Those claims haven’t been verified, and it’s unclear who would have authorized any request.
The Cost and the Blame
Sharpe said the production had already committed people, travel, and hotel rooms it couldn’t cancel. “I am very, very disappointed,” he said. He added that he’s disappointed “an HBCU would behave in this manner.” He was clear about who he thinks is at fault. “It’s not because of Nightcap,” he said, and it isn’t because of the show’s presenting sponsor.
He rejected the idea that Nightcap pulled out. According to Sharpe, A&T called it off at the last minute. He named Dr. Kecia Williams Smith as the person he holds responsible. HBCU Gameday identifies her as dean of the Willie A. Deese College of Business and Economics, a post she took permanently in January 2026 after serving as interim dean since July 2025. These are Sharpe’s allegations, not findings.
Why This Stings
Sharpe isn’t an outsider to HBCU culture. He starred at Savannah State from 1986 to 1989 and has called attending an HBCU one of the best decisions he ever made, as HBCU Buzz has noted in its Shannon Sharpe coverage. Nightcap launched an HBCU tour this fall. Its first stop was Prairie View A&M’s Baby Dome on Sept. 4, as HBCU Buzz reported in its Nightcap tour story.
Sharpe called Prairie View “the gold standard” for how a campus can welcome the show, with coaches, administrators, faculty, and students all available to take part. He described Nightcap as an entertainment show built on fan engagement, with students, audience members, and campus groups in the mix. During the live Super Bowl show, he and co-host Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson also urged viewers to donate to Southern University’s Human Jukebox Marching Band.
A Big Week for A&T
The timing makes the dispute louder. North Carolina A&T is celebrating the centennial of the Greatest Homecoming on Earth, known as GHOE. Festivities run through Nov. 1, and the Aggies host Elon on Saturday, Oct. 31, per HBCU Gameday. The university has projected more than 200,000 participants. HBCU Sports described that scale in July as closer to a city takeover than a campus event.
That visibility is exactly what Sharpe says A&T is passing up. He argued that Nightcap would have shown a national audience what HBCU pageantry looks like. Campuses do have reasons to manage outside productions, from student safety to logistics, so A&T’s explanation matters.
What We Don’t Know Yet
A&T hasn’t explained its position. It’s unclear whether any fees reflect university policy, who decided to end the plans, or whether the band’s schedule truly conflicted. Nightcap hasn’t said whether it will visit A&T another time. Until the university responds, Sharpe’s account is the only one on the record.
HBCU Buzz will update this HBCU news story if A&T or Nightcap adds anything. For now, the Shannon Sharpe North Carolina A&T standoff is a public dispute with only half the story told.
