HBCU Grads Outperform Black Graduates of Predominately White Institutions

There’s great news for students who opt for HBCUs over traditional white-majority institutions.

African-Americans who graduate from a historically Black college or university do better financially than Blacks who graduate from traditionally white colleges and universities, according to a new study by economists at Morehouse College and Howard University.

“Our results suggest that as HBCUs afford graduates relatively superior long-run returns, they continue to have a compelling educational justification as the labor market outcomes of their graduates are superior to what they would have been had they graduated from a non-HBCU,” wrote the researchers.

As the debate about the relevance of HBCUs continues, this survey shows that these schools continue to serve a purpose for students.

The study was published last month in the Review of Black Political Economy, and was written by Gregory N. Price of Morehouse College and William Spriggs and Omari H. Swinton of Howard University.

  14. Apparently, the belief, held secret within the black cummunity, that HBCUs were a superior source of education over their white counterparts, has been vanquished! This is grossly apparent, when you look at the so-called leadership of the Republican Partyl and in paritcular, those running for U.S. President!

  15. This is no secret HBCUs have been out performing traditional schools for years. Oh not shocking a school set up to teach African-American students are actually do that. Really!!!

  16. It is somewhat ironic and terribly
disappointing that we can celebrate “Hip Hop” movies and all the goes
along with that culture and then ignore the very importance and history of what
    sustains us….HBCUs……

  17. Being an HBCU grad myself,I know I was more knowledgeable than most of my peers. Because of the social stigma some are trying to attach to HBCUs,my professors pushed me harder and set higher standards and expectations. Most of my counterparts did not do half the work I was required to do.

  18. The source of the conclusions comes from two HBCUs. No bias there. Just like there is no bias when cigarette companys do research that proves cigarettes are harmless. But then again, if you graduated from a place that did not teach critical thinking you might not question the source. Do you really think an HBCU would reach a conclusion not favorable to them ? Think.

    • It’s about time that Blacks promote positive stories and actions about themselves. In your argument, I would say the same applies to the PWO’s that conducts studies about Americans when they publish crap like Blacks are two and three times more likely than whites to go to jail, be deadbeat dads or have higher incidents of deadly diseases.
