According to research done by StartClass, an online media outlet that provides information on a variance of data and who also recently named “The 25 Most Dangerous Colleges,” two of the country’s 107 historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) managed to round out the top half of the list, leading with No. 1 rank Benedict College for campus crimes and Central State University coming in at No. 3.

The site stressed the importance of safety as a factor when deciding where to attend college, and to find the colleges where the most crimes are committed relative to the size of their total enrolled student body, StartClass analyzed statistics from the Office of Postsecondary Education (OPE).

Here’s how the data was composed:

[quote_box_center]The resulting 25 schools are the four-year universities (with at least 1,000 graduate and undergraduate students) with the highest rate of alleged criminal offenses (murder/non-negligent manslaughter, forcible and non-forcible sex offenses, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, motor vehicle theft, and arson) on average from 2011 to 2013. The OPE collects data from campus security authorities and local law enforcement agencies, and therefore its statistics are not directly comparable to the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting System, which only collects statistics from police authorities.[/quote_box_center]

  1. First off I’d love to see more concrete data. Not only because I attended one of these schools but more so in the time that they did their “research”, and rarely heard of any offense. Though it is important that parents and students are at ease I believe it’s even more important to not tarnish the names of HBCUs without first double checking the checker. Especially for the schools so small where you couldn’t hide sand in a desert. Come on now HBCUBUZZ.

    • Well they gave numbers. These numbers are based off the the incidents that actually occur. That’s all the data you need. Nothing else.

      • I’m aware that they gave numbers, I’m questioning the validity of the research.

    • I agree. There is something fishy here HBCU Buzz should do its own independent investigation. Precisely what incidents are used in the calculations, who reports what to whom and when? The eight schools are, for the most part, clustered in a limited geographical area. They are all exceedingly small. I need a lot more information before I am willing to accept this.

  2. I attended Shaw University in 1995-2000. And most of these offenses were committed by “Raleigh Locals” rather than students who attended Shaw. I will say that there were a few incidents that occurred by Shaw students, but that doesn’t compare to the offenses that were committed by those who did not attend Shaw.

    • I agree. Crimes committed by the local resistance should not be counted as campus crimes. I think this is more of a HBCU attack because my daughter goes to a predominantly white school and she said the white students have more campus dramma than the HBCU next to it.
