From past to the present, the significance of Black History exemplifies the essence of just how much representation matters. Seeing someone like us on screen, —whether in media or film is nothing short of inspiring. If we can see them doing all the things, then so can we, right?

The power of representation is why Black creatives are essential in pushing the culture forward. This is why initiatives such as Culture Rated are here. As a company that consistently reflects what’s next, we often look back at our history in order to look forward to help shape and celebrate the future.

What is Culture Rated?
Culture Rated is a Prime Video initiative that champions Black creatives, perspectives, and community. They spotlight the innovative voices that drive culture and amplify entertainment that speaks authentically to the Black experience across events, social media, partnerships, the Culture Rated Collection on Prime Video and more.

Leaning into Prime Video’s Culture Rated campaign, this Black History Month we
will be celebrating the multi-faceted and limitless nature of Black creativity from Donald Glover’s reimagining of the classic Mr & Mrs Smith series, to Barry Sanders’ record-breaking documentary Bye Bye Barry.

These shows on Culture Rated redefine genres, reimagine classics, break records, and confirm that this is Where Black Is aims to show Black people are constantly changing the game.

Sports ‘Most Influential’

Who doesn’t love a triple threat?!

It’s precisely what we witness when Black creatives transition and excel in multiple fields. Such is true for rap legends like Snoop Dogg, dominating his role in the new sports-themed film, The Underdoggs, or iconic cornerback Deion Sanders chronicling his transition into coaching in his Emmy-nominated docuseries, Coach Prime.

This Black History Month, Culture Rated is helping Amazon widen their spotlight to celebrate even more melanated magnificence. Each week this February, Culture Rated will celebrate and feature the “Most Influential” Black creators in sports — the icons & influencers of today, and the emerging trailblazers of tomorrow.

The Underdoggs, recently released on Prime Video January 26th, follows Jaycen “Two Js” Jennings, a washed-up former pro football star who hits rock bottom, and is sentenced to community service, coaching an unruly pee-wee football team in his hometown. However, what may appear to be just par for the course may turn his life around and reclaim his love of the game.

Additional Culture Rated selections featuring triple-threat Black creatives in sports include:

  • Coach Prime: Season 1 followed Deion Sanders’ journey at HBCU Jackson State, and
Season 2 goes beyond the headlines and into the heart of what really happened on and off the field of the year’s hottest sports story, the eponymous Coach Prime’s first year as head coach for the Buffaloes.
  • Redefined: J.R. Smith: Follows JR Smith’s start at HBCU NC A&T and his move from
professional NBA player to student athlete on the golf team. Produced by LeBron
    James’ UNINTERRUPTED / SpringHill.
  • Giannis: A Marvelous Journey: A new documentary premiering on Prime Video February 19th from Giannis Antetokounmpo’s Improbable Media that chronicles the extraordinary odyssey of NBA mega-star Giannis Antetokounmpo from an impoverished childhood in Greece as the son of Nigerian immigrants to the very top of the basketball world.
