Shaw Faculty & Students Protest Administration

Protestors took to the streets Monday criticizing the new administration at Shaw University. Faculty and students gathered outside the school gates asking for more rights for university teachers. According to organizers, faculty makes about $32,000 “with no pension and constantly facing loss of benefits while self-serving administrators make up to $225,000 with moving expenses, company credit cards, generous travel and phone perks, and exquisite bathrooms.”

“I hope that our board and administrators bring all of us to the table and we discuss together how we can bring about a better Shaw that adheres to our ultimate mission,” said Dr. James Nelson, Jr., professor of mathematics at Shaw University.

Shaw University President Dr. Irma McClaurin released the following statement: Shaw University is noted for its tradition of involvement in social justice and demonstrations. Thus, we recognize the right of individuals to express their opinion. Be that as it may, it is unfortunate that at the very moment Shaw is gaining positive recognition locally and nationally, that a few have chosen to become involved in University personnel matters, on which I am prevented from commenting for confidentiality reasons.
