DURHAM, N.C. – After leading the Eagles to their first 8-win season as a Division I program and a share of the conference championship for a second straight year, North Carolina Central University head football coach Jerry Mack has been named as one of 15 finalists for the STATS FCS Coach of the Year award.
After knocking off nationally-ranked rival North Carolina A&T State on Saturday to end the campaign with seven consecutive victories, Mack became the first coach in NCCU history to win 15 games in his first two seasons.
A year ago as a rookie head coach, Mack led the Eagles to seven wins, the most since moving to the Division I-FCS level in 2007. His squad also posted a 6-2 conference record and earned its first win over a nationally-ranked FCS opponent to become Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference co-champions.
He improved on that standard in 2015, as NCCU posted an overall record of 8-3, including a 7-1 conference mark for another conference co-championship. Two of this season’s setbacks were against teams from the bowl subdivision (Duke and FIU) and the third was decided in the final minutes of the contest to a team that ended the regular season ranked No. 25 in the STAT FCS poll.
The winner of the STATS FCS Coach of the Year award will be honored at the STATS FCS Awards Banquet and Presentation, scheduled for Jan. 8 in Frisco, Texas, on the eve of the FCS championship game.
