HBCU Small Business Grant commenced by HBCU Buzz, will help increase the number of black-owned businesses by awarding funds to students at historically black colleges or universities who own, or want to own a business.
Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have been concerned about the formal business education of African American students since the Atlanta Exposition in 1895 (Joseph Pierce, Negro Business and Business Education, 1947). Since that time, these schools have trained students who have become entrepreneurs, organizational leaders, and employees in enterprises that address economic development needs throughout the world, especially within the African American community. Because HBCUs represent around 1 percent of institutions of higher learning, the role alumni plays in the success of the school is monumental.
- In 2007, the federal Small Business Association reported that black-owned businesses account for around 5 percent of American businesses.
MISSION – The mission of the HBCU Small Business Grant is to increase the number of small businesses owned and operated by African American students and graduates from HBCUs.
VALUE – The success of African American Business owners from Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
