A 1970s political activist who once was listed on the FBI’s Most Wanted list is getting a forum at a North Carolina university.

The 67-year-old retired professor at the University of California at Santa Cruz spent recent years writing about how the high numbers of blacks and Hispanics in American prisons oppresses minorities. She was the first black woman to head the FBI’s Most Wanted list.

Davis was removed from her teaching job at UCLA in 1969 because she was a member of the Communist Party. A year later, she was charged with murder and kidnapping in a shootout in front of the Marin County, Calif., courthouse.

The Black Panthers member was acquitted after a 13-week trial in 1972.
