Norfolk State Campus Life takes the crown with over 11,000 votes, leading a field of HBCU teams celebrating campus culture, creativity, and community.
Behold the green and gold! Norfolk State University’s Norfolk State Campus Life has won the A Different World Challenge, earning over 11,000 votes with a reimagined opening sequence celebrating Spartan pride and the experiences that make NSU feel like home.
Led by team captain Viviana Muhammad, Norfolk State Campus Life brought its own generation’s perspective to the challenge, connecting academics, friendship, style, and self-expression with the playful energy of the iconic A Different World opening.
The challenge invited HBCU student teams to tell their campus stories through their own interpretations of the show’s opening sequence. Ten finalists brought those visions to audiences, who watched, shared, and voted for their favorites. Norfolk State finished at the top, followed by Alabama A&M University, Xavier University of Louisiana, Dillard University, and North Carolina A&T State University.
Meet the Winning Team: Norfolk State Campus Life
For Norfolk State Campus Life, the creative concept centered on the many experiences that shape college life. Academics and campus activity shared space with friendships, personal style, and the freedom students find to express themselves.
In its submission, the team described an approach that preserved the original opening’s fun, energetic spirit while showing what the HBCU experience looks like for today’s students. Black excellence, individuality, and community were central to that vision.
That perspective gave the entry a clear identity: a celebration of the people and everyday connections that make Norfolk State its own different world. The team’s submitted caption captured that pride:
“It’s a different world at NSU!”
The caption went on to celebrate Spartan pride, friendship, culture, and the unforgettable moments that make the university feel like home, closing with a familiar declaration: “BEHOLD!”
Muhammad, who led the team’s submission, listed Spartan Legion Marching Band and Tau Beta Sigma as her campus affiliations. Her submitted social accounts are @viv1_ana on Instagram and @viv1_ana on TikTok.
Through Norfolk State Campus Life, the team shared a student perspective on belonging—one that makes room for individual expression within a shared campus culture. Its first-place finish brings that celebration of NSU to the center of this year’s challenge.

2. Alabama A&M University — Crew75 x Student Publications
Led by Khari James Hartman, Crew75 x Student Publications built its concept around a campus question: What happens when the bell rings after hours?
That premise gave Alabama A&M’s entry a story rooted in a familiar campus tradition. The team’s submission identified locations including Bell & Spring, Louis Crews Stadium, and the Engineering and Technology Building, connecting its creative interpretation to the places that shape Bulldog life.
3. Xavier University of Louisiana — A Different Xavier
Team captains Oba El and Kyla Pigford introduced audiences to Xavier through the story of new students Indira, Shaun, and Marshawn. Beginning with a campus tour alongside Mister and Miss Xavier, the concept follows the students as they venture out on their own to discover what it means to be a Xavierite.
The team’s submission highlighted the chapel, University Center, Administration Building, Norman C. Francis statue, and NPHC plots. References to Live Music Friday and graduation connected everyday campus experiences with the milestones students share.
4. Dillard University — A Dillard World
Led by Madison Cox, A Dillard World welcomed viewers to the Avenue of the Oaks while placing students at the center of its story.
The team’s concept celebrated the people who give Dillard its identity, including students representing the National Pan-Hellenic Council, Student Government Association, and Pre-Alumni Council. With its own “A Dillard World” homecoming on the horizon, the submission offered both a welcome back for Bleu Devils and an introduction for audiences discovering the university.
5. North Carolina A&T State University — Aggie Universe
Led by Daniel Animashaun, Aggie Universe followed freshman Tobenna and his mentor, Levi, on a journey through Aggie Land.
The concept introduced student creatives, athletes, and Greek life, highlighting the personalities and connections that make a new campus come alive. Familiar settings—including the yellow steps, student center, and Aggie Stadium—grounded the story in the A&T experience. The submission credited The Limitless Creatives and DA Visualz LLC for production and @atw_daniel as director of photography.
