Tyrese Gibson at Howard University Giving Advice About Relationships

Tyrese Gibson was at Howard Wednesday promoting his new book “How to Get out Of Your Own Way”. Also giving information and advice on relationships.  His words were very powerful and sat well with the students of Howard University.  During a discussing about the different topics of his book with the host and moderator, Jeff Johnson, Gibson goes into detail about the problems people go through in personal relationships.

“During the discussion, Gibson gave brazen advice to the young women and men of The Mecca on family relationships, personal relationships, sex and children.  The R&B crooner nearly incited a riot when stating that to most men, sex is like changing shoes and cheating is almost always a part of the picture. Before losing his many fans in Cramton last night, he clarified by stating that there’re still men in the world that are faithful”

FAMU to Offer Distant Learning Courses in August

FAMU to Offer Distant Learning Courses in August

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.— Today, Florida A&M University (FAMU) Board of Trustees unanimously approved the one-year contract with the Tom Joyner Online Education (TJOE) for its distance-learning program.

The online program will offer master’s degrees in nursing, public health and business.  These programs will commence in August 2011 and university officials are expecting 271 students during the first year of the program. The courses will be hosted on www.hbcusonline.com.

“The need for distance education programs is first and foremost because of student demand, said Director for Instructional Technology Franzetta D. Fitz. “Many students are seeking educational opportunities outside of the traditional campus environment in order to qualify for advancement in their careers while continuing to fulfill their daily obligations.  An online distance education program allows FAMU to compete with other institutions to provide the same quality of education online that our traditional students receive.  In addition, it allows us to increase our global presence as a 21st century, state-of-the-art institution.”

The three graduate programs were selected as the pilot programs because they are in high demand. According to Fitz, the university plans to start with these graduate programs as the university builds its infrastructure to prepare to offer more online degree programs.

“Once we launch these online programs, we will move to the second phase of our plan which is to offer more graduate degree programs as well as undergraduate degree completions,” said Fitz. “The online degree completions program will initially be developed for previous FAMU students who have stopped out of school for various reasons to have the opportunity to complete their degrees online.”

Over the past two years, FAMU has created a comprehensive distance education program. The university solicited information from companies that could provide the technological infrastructure, costs and marketing support necessary for the successful delivery of online degree programs. TJOE was the most qualified company to take on the task.

FAMU will be provided with marketing and recruitment assistance, student enrollment services, non-academic student support, consulting services and academic program development by TJOE.

TJOE will provide 50 hours per year of consulting assistance during the Term of the Agreement to the university, in an effort to better prepare students for success with distance education programs.  These consulting services include technology support, academic program and faculty management, academic distance education quality control, and administrative and student support issues.

For admission requirements or further information, contact Franzetta D. Fitz in the Office of Instructional Technology at (850) 599-3460 or by email at oit@famu.edu.

Virginia State Opens New Dining and Event Center

The dining hall is part of VSU’s 20/20 master plan to increase enrollment to 10,000 students.

ETTRICK – Students at Virginia State University have a new state-of-the-art dining hall. The $7 million Gateway Dining Event Center will not only accommodate 1,250 students and staff, but also serves as a venue for both university and public events.

“This is a great day for VSU,” said University President Dr. Keith Miller at yesterday’s ribbon cutting. “We want to be on the leading edge with everything that we do, and this new facility is part of that effect,” he said. Miller added that the new dining hall is part of the school’s continuing improvement efforts.

The new facility was built from the ground up. Construction started in July 2010, and patrons dine on two floors with a combined size of 40,500 square foot. The downstairs rooms accommodate 600 guests, while the upstairs has room for 650.

“The dining hall is part of VSU’s 20/20 master plan to increase enrollment to 10,000 students,” said John Griffin, resident district manager with Thompson hospitality, the company that operates all catering facilities on campus. “With more students, we need more facilities, and we need to build them before the new students come here,” Griffin said.

The new dining hall is not only open to students, but also to the general public. “Anyone can come eat here,” Griffin said. “We are also dedicated to serve trendy foods and healthy choices with a low fat content and low sodium,” Griffin said. “We are making students eat healthier and they don’t even know it,” Griffin said.

Upstairs rooms and lounges can also be rented out for corporate and private events like weddings and conferences

Howard Vs. Morgan State University Spring Fashion Show Recap

Both of the fashion shows were great but on two different scales. It’s almost like comparing street fashion (howard) to high fashion (Morgan), both are appreciated but in their own realms.

HU vs MSU Fashion Show Recap

Both of the fashion shows were great but on two different scales. It’s almost like comparing street fashion to high fashion, both are appreciated but in their own realms.

(Howard Univ) One of my favorite HBCU owns accessory line,AKEYNO.

The african print head pieces added a touch of originality.

Howard University’s spring fashion show was entitled “Envy, A Sinful Desire”. I appreciated how Howard used a lot of Howard’s own designers like LaVita clothing, Be You designs, and of course Howard paraphernalia! The fashion show definitely showcased an HBCU experience with the crowd dancing during intermission, Fraternities and Sororities strolling, and other organizations taking group photos. It reminded me once again why I chose an HBCU!

VIEW ALL PICTURES Howard Show

(Morgan State Univ) Jean Jumpers are back! The eyewear really set this look off.

Morgan State University’s fashion show was a completely different vibe. They accomplished their goal of putting on a high fashion couture show. The way they utilized the whole showroom as their runway was brilliant. They made sure everyone is the house felt like they were VIP. They paid tribute to different magazines such as GQ, Vanity Fair, and Vogue. That is exactly how they modeled their show, as if they were in NYC’s fashion week. The diversity of the clothing was amazing. They showcased everything from creative one piece bathing suites to couture upscale dresses!

From the PWI(Predominately White Institution) to the HBCU

My experience going from predominantly white institutions to Howard University was the best thing that ever happened to me.

From the PWI to the HBCU

By Paris Riley

For many students who are currently attending historically black colleges and universities, this is their first experience attending a this type of  institution. For years they spent days in classrooms where no one looked like them. Some of them might never have had any real interactions with other African Americans outside their families and, maybe, a couple friends. For many of these students the transition from a lifetime of predominantly white institutions is difficult, while others find it to be a sort of homecoming.

My experience going from a predominantly white institutions to Howard University, was probably the best thing that ever happened to me. I remember my first day of class like it was yesterday. It was truly an exceptional moment for me when I realized that I was not the only, or one of the only, African American students in class. In fact, I was a little taken back by it when I first became aware. After settling in, Howard felt like home. It did not take me long to realize the abundance of benefits that comes from attending an HBCU.

However, this is not the case for every African-American who chooses to attend an HBCU after PWIs. For some the transition is rough. So rough that they feel the need to transfer. Others cannot even fathom the idea of leaving what they know, and therefore, continue their predominantly white institution education.

Danielle Simms, a freshman at Stanford University, knows that idea all too well. During her time attending majority White schools in her hometown of Ohio, Simms felt the way that many Blacks feel attending schools like that. She said that kind of environment put a lot of unnecessary pressure on her. “I constantly felt like I had to prove myself as a Black student. If I failed, I knew that the kids around me were the types of people to generalize my failures to all Black people” said Simms. However, she opted to continue her education in a predominantly White school because even with all the pressure associated, that was still her comfort zone.

What Simms described feeling, though, is not uncommon at all for African-Americans attending PWIs. That is why many choose to break the cycle, like Jasmine Farmer, who attended Spelman College. She chose to attend Spelman because she wanted to “experience something different than [her] upbringing” in a majority white area. She said that her transition was very exciting and she was able to so things she felt she couldn’t in her previous schooling. “I wanted to discuss certain topics related to ‘my history’ without feeling uncomfortable. I wanted to feel what it was like to be the majority for once” said Farmer.

That is an example of the kind of thoughts most who take the HBCU route have. There is a yearning for that sort of inclusion that most who go from PWIs to HBCUs have. More often than not that yearning is satisfied by attending an HBCU, which is why so many brave the transition and see it through because the HBCU experience is absolutely one of a kind.

I had the honor of meeting with one of Bowie State University’s successful businessmen, Marcus Ponder. He has been in business for the past four years and is continuing to shake hands and close deals! Marcus has been able to balance as a full time student all while running a flourishing cleaning and janitorial business. You can check him out at www.ponder-cleaning.com Marcus Ponder the founder and managing member of Ponder Investment Group, LLC DBA Ponder Cleaning. Started off doing business at 18 years old with his first real investment into a nightclub in Baltimore, MD. Unfortunately, like most businessmen at that time, he lost a lot as the economy declined. Working in business and being young, you always have to realize that mistakes will be made. So he had no one there to guide him, just hungry businessmen looking to feed on young entrepreneurs. Once realized it was time to leave the nightclub industry, ponder moved on to do smaller and safer investments in stocks, bonds, and mutual funds. This not only allowed him to focus on my Finance Degree, but it allowed him to really study, research, and read about real business. Finally, after a two year break, ponder was ready to get back to business. He created a new LLC, developed a marketing strategy, revamped his business plan, taped into his old network, and there he is today.

How did you get in the cleaning business?

I have always admired the people who created what we as consumers see everyday. You ever just walk into an establishment and are breath taken by its beauty? That’s how I created Ponder Cleaning. As a company we thrive on taking something good and making it amazing.

What unique skills or interest prepared you for a career in business?

I honestly have to say I have always had an interest in business. As a teenager, I spent a lot of time reading about successful businesses and what it would take to have one. One person I admire the most is Warren Buffet. Not because he is the greatest investor of all time, but because of his dedication to his craft. I hope to be better than him and I know I can because of my strong work habits.

What Products do you offer?

I provide cleaning and janitorial services to both commercial (businesses, office buildings, warehouses, retail stores etc.) and residential properties. Check us out at www.ponder-cleaning.com

What inspires you to keep going everyday?

“The will to make it! Everyday young entrepreneurs are looked down upon. I want to be a voice for them all and let the world know that we are just as talented and successful as the next.”

HBCU Graduates Coming Face-to-face with the Job Market

We all know how much society stresses the importance of higher education.

HBCU Graduates Coming Face-to-face with the Job Market

By: April C. Thornton

While students attend a histrionically black college or university, we create opportunities and prepare ourselves to land that dream career after graduation. We spend endless amount of time sitting in the classrooms listening to our professor’s ‘life changing’ lectures, hearing our advisors give us ultimatums if our career plan does not work accordingly, volunteering and interning at organizations just so they can remember our names and know that we want to be considered for an opening position and finally sending cover letters and resumes to apply for various job positions. So, why are majority of African American alumni finding it difficult to achieve a prosperous career after graduation?

In March 2011, more than 190,000 private sector jobs were created nationwide. This may sound like music to the ears of alumni looking to jump start their career, but that musical sound comes to a screaking halt. The private sector jobs that have been created are opening positions for Panera Bread, Wal-Mart, grocery stores and temporary positions in the government. Except for government positions, these jobs pay their employers minimal wage to only work for a few hours a day. These jobs are not custom fit for African Americans with a Bachelors and/or Master’s degree. Alumni have dedicated these years in school to avoid a career making minimal wage and working at the local mom and pop store.

Jennifer Woods graduated from Bowie State University in spring 2010 with a degree in Communications. Woods admits that it has been a difficult process in trying to find employment in her field. “It seems like everyone has some kind of ‘hook-up’ to get the job they want,” says Woods. Even though she is content with her present position as Sales Lead at Ann Taylor Loft, she is optimistic that one day she will have the opportunity to start her career in communications.

We all know how much society stresses the importance of higher education. We see every media outlet advertising educational establishments along with their subliminal messages to students. Everest College motto is Career Education Life and Bowie State University motto is Prepare for Life. As, students we acknowledge our institutes motto as being true, but as soon as we graduate the motto becomes a faulty message. Society’s perception is that achieving an academic degree can increase someone’s chances in finding employment. This is not necessarily true. I guess the saying is true ‘It’s not what you know but who you know.’ This is the reality of HBCU graduates coming face-to-face with the job market.
