Freeman’s Single NCA&T Leads Aggies to Win Over UMES

GREENSBORO – Kelvin Freeman went on a rampage at the plate late last season to earn MEAC Rookie of the Year honors. The North Carolina A&T baseball team hopes he can produce a replay of that in 2011 as the season gets closer to the MEAC Tournament.

Freeman hit a big two-out, two-run RBI single in the seventh inning to give the Aggies the lead for good in a 9-6 win over Maryland Eastern Shore Saturday night at War Memorial Stadium. The two teams will play an 11 a.m., doubleheader on Sunday from WMS.

The Aggies big seventh inning didn’t start out with a spark. Andre McKoy flew out to left field for second out of the inning. But with the Aggies down 6-5, freshman Luke Tendler singled to center field which moved Carvell Copeland to third after he reached on an error. Marquis Riley walked to load the bases, and Dairio Little walked to tie the game at 6.

Little’s walk set up Freeman’s heroics and ended the night for Maryland Eastern Shore starter Jacob Foreman. Freeman lofted a 2-2 pitch into center field that bounced in front of Tre-von Johnson to score Tendler and Riley for an 8-6 Aggies lead. Brandon Parker came on in relief and unleashed a wild pitch that allowed Little to score for the four-run inning.

Aggies’ 4×1 Teams Win at F&F Games NCA&T

If the North Carolina A&T men are to win any gold at the MEAC Championships this season, Jarrell Elliott and the relay teams will likely be involved. The Aggie relay teams have competed well against some of the best teams in the country this outdoor season.

When they had a chance to perform in front of the home crowd at Irwin Belk Track, they looked even better. On Saturday, the North Carolina A&T track and field team completed its first home track meet of the season with the second day of The Friendship and Freedom Games at Irwin Belk Track.

The Aggies competed well despite adverse weather conditions. There was a 45-minute delay because of inclement weather. Once the meet resumed, the wind gusted up to 40 miles per hour.

“The team showed a lot of mental toughness today,” said N.C. A&T associate head coach James Daniels. “In order to be the championship program we want to be, we must be able to perform in all conditions. I thought we competed at a high level in tough conditions. It was great to see.”

The men’s 4×100 meter relay team of Darryl Williams, Jonathan Hancock, Jarrell Elliott and Earl House placed first with a time of 40.65. The time was not even their best showing. The team has finished below 40 seconds this season. Elliott stepped away from his teammates to win the men’s 400 meters. He also had a sixth-place finish in the men’s 200 meters. His 21.08 time in the 200 was a personal record.

Morgan State Launches Mobile Journalism Lab,

Leading HBCU’s in Worldwide New Media Network

The Challenge: Create a global news network in three weeks, using only iPhones.
The Solution: VeriCorder Technology, with the support of the BEA and Action Life Media, have launched a planetary experiment in Mobile Journalism and Hyper Local Networks.

Global MoJo shows how any media company can launch and monetize a Hyper Local Network, using mobile apps like VeriCorder’s 1st Video, and the VeriLocal network system.

At Morgan State University, Prof. Richardson’s unique teaching style earned her the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and Advising for the 2007-2008 school year. That same year, she earned a promotion from the rank of lecturer to assistant professor. Most recently, the Knight Foundation’s Institute for Interactive Journalism awarded her a $25,000 grant to create a cutting-edge mobile journalism (“MOJO”) lab at Morgan. All MOJO students will learn to report using only Apple iPhones and iPads. Richardson appeared on NPR in June to discuss the project. Before becoming a professor, Richardson began her journalism career at JET magazine. There she had the privilege of working for, and with, the late publishing magnate, John H. Johnson. Within four months, Johnson promoted her from intern to assistant editor of the magazine, allowing her to pen cover stories at the tender age of 23. Richardson’s work also has appeared in O, The Oprah Magazine, Baltimore Sun.com and the Examiner newspapers. She earned the Weinstein-Luby Outstanding Young Journalist Award in 2002, and the Freedom Forum’s Chips Quinn Scholars award that same year.

Newly Elected Florida Gov. Rick Scott Cuts All Funding To Florida’s Two HBCUs

Bethune-Cookman University, a private school in Daytona Beach stands to lose more than $2 million in state revenue.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott cuts all funding to states HBCUs

In his first proposed budget Rick Scott the newly elected governor has cut all funding to Florida’s two HBCUs. Bethune-Cookman University, a private school in Daytona Beach stands to lose more than $2 million in state revenue. The state has, for years, helped fund Florida’s private, historically black colleges. But Scott has completely wiped out funding for Bethune-Cookman and Florida Memorial University in Miami Gardens.

Because Scott’s proposal is just the first step in a months-long budgeting process, Bethune spokeswoman Meredith Rodriguez said college officials will be “patiently waiting” to see how the process unfolds.

Shaw Faculty & Students Protest Administration

Protestors took to the streets Monday criticizing the new administration at Shaw University. Faculty and students gathered outside the school gates asking for more rights for university teachers. According to organizers, faculty makes about $32,000 “with no pension and constantly facing loss of benefits while self-serving administrators make up to $225,000 with moving expenses, company credit cards, generous travel and phone perks, and exquisite bathrooms.”

“I hope that our board and administrators bring all of us to the table and we discuss together how we can bring about a better Shaw that adheres to our ultimate mission,” said Dr. James Nelson, Jr., professor of mathematics at Shaw University.

Shaw University President Dr. Irma McClaurin released the following statement: Shaw University is noted for its tradition of involvement in social justice and demonstrations. Thus, we recognize the right of individuals to express their opinion. Be that as it may, it is unfortunate that at the very moment Shaw is gaining positive recognition locally and nationally, that a few have chosen to become involved in University personnel matters, on which I am prevented from commenting for confidentiality reasons.

Alpha Phi Alpha BETA RHO Spring 2011 Probate Shaw University

So this last week was nothing short of mayhem! I had to shoot and do consultations pretty much everyday and finally, I have sometime to myself. I averaged 3 hours of sleep every night, my body aches all over and I feel like I’ve been beaten with a stick…but I’ll do it all over again!

The Beta Rho Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. at Shaw University hosted their new member presentation show on Thursday and it was one of my favorites so far this season. I’m actually a fan of Beta Rho’s probates, I shot their Spring 2009 probate and this one was just as impressive and entertaining. I felt like a gymnast because I had to jump, dodge, contort and squeeze through to get the shots, and get them I did. You be the judge…enjoy!

Defense Dominates Spring Game

GREENSBORO, April 9, 2011 – When a coach of Rod Broadway’s considerable reputation steps on the field, expectations soar without hesitation. But following North Carolina A&T’s annual Spring Football Game on Saturday, the first-year Aggies head coach had one reminder: “It’s only been 15 days.”

Broadway was cautious about being too critical of his team. He understands many of his players are learning a new system and a new coaching staff for the third time in four years.

“Our goal is simple,” said Broadway. “We’re just going to get better. We’re going to get it turned around. I don’t know how much time that will take us because we’re down so far when you talk about scholarships and (Academic Progress Rate). But once we get our scholarships back, we’ll be okay.”

The Aggies concluded their spring session at Aggie Stadium with Saturday’s scrimmage clearing showing the defense is ahead of the offense. After the Aggies ran 100 plays, the gold-jerseyed Aggies defense recorded four turnovers and four three and outs to come away with a 26-10 win over the offense in blue.

Prairie View A and M student takes charge over Texas

By Jerome D. Bailey Jr.

Over 5,000 were in attendance for an intense protest On Wednesday April 6th, in Texas on Capitol Hill in Austin and received positive results. The Texas House recently passed an erratic budget in America by cutting 25 billion dollars from education, healthcare, removing funding for HIV patient programs and way more. If this happens, 350,000 will lose their jobs. Moreover, pressure is mounting on the Texas Senate to cut much less. Right after the capitol was flooded by citizens urging NO to 25 billion in cuts, leaders in the Texas Senate announced they was greatly reduce cuts. Osadeba Omakaro, sophomore at Agriculture major at Prairie View A and M University and representative of the Texas League of Young Voters, said cuts to education would be devastating for students and that young voters will make their voices heard in the next election.

“You can’t make these cuts and kill our dreams,” Omakaro told the cheering crowd. “You can’t make these cuts and expect us to be quiet.”
