Suspended after Arrests #BuzzKiller

Two assistant football coaches at Shaw University have been suspended without pay, following their recent arrests, University officials confirm. In a press release sent out Wednesday, University officials say Torey Ross and Jermonty Kimbrough were arrested recently and have been suspended without pay. Sherri Fillingham, spokeswoman for Shaw University, says Ross was arrested for failure to appear and Kimbrough was arrested on April 7 for possession with intent to distribute.

The Great Lakes Hip-Hop Invasion Tour, hosted by Jae Murphy, got Cramton Auditorium packed of not only Howard students but DMV area locals and other DMV area students.

Big Sean hit the stage accompanied by his crew and DJ MoBeatz, but not after an hour and a half (feeling like eternity) of opening acts, which included, Jon Connor and Big Shan. Students Nick Beauregard and Chinyere Okoro comically tweet their sentiment on the various entertaining opening acts.

The audience enjoyed a pre-show and intermission by DJ Chubb E Swag and Chase B. When Big Sean hit the stage, the entire audience flocked to the front of the stage, screaming.

Big Sean, the twenty-three year old born Sean Anderson, first performed ‘My Last’ his newest hit featuring artist Chris Brown. Surprise guest, Waka Flocka Flame, hit the stage riling the crowd up even further by performing his verse from the hit single ‘No Hands’. During the remainder of the set, Big Sean performed the songs, “Bullsh*tting”, “My Closet, Supa Dupa Lemonade among others.

It was toward the close of the month, and while the excitement most furiously grew, they awaited the coming of a masked ball of the most unusual magnificence. It was an indescribable scene that masquerade. Saint Augustine’s Rashad Ingram Named CIAA Player of the Year

Shortstop Rashad Ingram (Sr./Savannah, Ga.) of Saint Augustine’s College was named 2011 CIAA Baseball Player of the Year Tuesday by the CIAA and the CIAA Baseball Coaches Association.

Ingram headlines eight Falcons who earned All-CIAA baseball honors including six who made first team. First-team selections include pitcher Brandon Stewart (Sr./Riverdale, Ga.), catcher Josh Bishop (Sr./Richmond, Va.), third baseman Alex Howard (Jr./Wilson, N.C.), center fielder Joe Pierce (Sr./Wetumpka, Ala.) and left fielder Wayne Lewis (Jr./Charlotte, N.C.) Second-team picks were utility player Chris Vette (Sr./Hampton, Va.) and second baseman Kevin White (Sr./Dunn, N.C.). The Falcons placed the most players on the All-CIAA teams.

Ingram is the second Falcon in three seasons to win CIAA baseball player of the year. Former standout Anthione Shaw, who also played shortstop, captured the award in 2009.

Ingram was the overwhelming favorite for the league’s top individual honor after an eye-popping regular season. A computer information systems major, Ingram is the NCAA Division II leader in runs (66), steals (74) and stolen bases per game (1.48). He is tied for third nationally in base on balls (38), ninth in runs per game (1.32), 18th in on-base percentage (.527), and tied for 13th in hits (65).

“It is an honor to be awarded CIAA Player of the Year,” said Ingram, who leads the Falcons in 12 categories including batting average (.394). “I am very thankful for my teammates and coaches who made it all possible. It has been a long growth for me these past four years, and to end my career as player of the year really feels like a great accomplishment. My main goals of the season are winning the CIAA Championship and going to the regionals, so winning this award is a bonus and a blessing.”

Albany State Shows off Aerospace Lab

LBANY, Ga. — Albany State University gave area media a glimpse Monday of NASA’s educational efforts in Southwest Georgia.

The Aerospace Education Lab, located in the James Pendergrast Library, is part of ASU and NASA’s SEMAA (Science, Engineering and Math Aerospace Academy) outreach to the region’s schools.

“We want to give the media in our area a chance to experience the only aerospace education laboratory in the University System of Georgia,” said Danielle Johnson, data program manager/family cafe coordinator of ASU’s NASA SEMAA Program. “Our program provides an exceptional resource for students in our area.”

The program serves students K-12 from eight schools in Dougherty County and all of Worth County.

“The lab has 11 work stations,” lab coordinator Sammie Sims said.

“It’s no secret that the Unites State is lagging behind our rivals in the world when it comes to math and science. This is a hands-on experience and we are trying to get as many kids as possible involved.”

HBCU Grads Outperform Black Graduates of Predominately White Institutions

African-Americans who graduate from a historically Black college or university do better financially than Blacks who graduate from traditionally white colleges and universities, according to a new study by economists at Morehouse College and Howard University.

There’s great news for students who opt for HBCUs over traditional white-majority institutions.

African-Americans who graduate from a historically Black college or university do better financially than Blacks who graduate from traditionally white colleges and universities, according to a new study by economists at Morehouse College and Howard University.

“Our results suggest that as HBCUs afford graduates relatively superior long-run returns, they continue to have a compelling educational justification as the labor market outcomes of their graduates are superior to what they would have been had they graduated from a non-HBCU,” wrote the researchers.

As the debate about the relevance of HBCUs continues, this survey shows that these schools continue to serve a purpose for students.

The study was published last month in the Review of Black Political Economy, and was written by Gregory N. Price of Morehouse College and William Spriggs and Omari H. Swinton of Howard University.

Shaw University suspends classes for remainder of semester following NC tornado damage

Shaw announced that it will suspend classes for the rest of the spring semester due to the damage.

Shaw University announced Sunday afternoon that it will suspend classes for the rest of the spring semester due to the damage caused by Saturday’s tornado.

“While we exist to educate these young men and women, our first priority is their safety and well being,” said Shaw President Dr. Irma McClaurin  in a written statement.  “With this widespread damage, we could not resume operations in time to continue classes over the next two weeks.”

There were eight weeks of classes left in the semester, as well as a week of exams.  The University says graduation will go on as scheduled at the Dorton Areana on Saturday, May 7 at 11 a.m.  School officials say, “Grades will be assigned based on work done to this point in the semester, and the math and English competency exam requirement for seniors has been suspended for this semester only.”

The fatal storm system that surged through central North Carolina “severely damaged” areas of Shaw University as well as affected students at Saint Augustine’s College. A representative for the University says the campus was “severely damaged” but no students or University personnel were injured in the storm.

Tornadoes and other severe storms that smashed North CarolinaSaturday afternoon killed at least 10 people, officials said. The National Weather Service said tornado were sighted in 19 counties and it had received unconfirmed reports of at least 10 deaths in all, The Charlotte Observer reported. “More than likely we had eight tornadoes in North Carolina,” Gail Hartsfield, an NWS meteorologist inRaleigh, said. The Observer and the Bladen Journal said the deaths included three people in a mobile home park in northeast Raleigh, three deaths in Bladen County, one in Sanford and another in Cumberland County. “We got down in the bathroom, and we knelt down on the floor, and I was hollering and hollering,” said storm survivor Brenda McClamroch, who lives in southwest Wake with her husband Tenny. “It all happened in a split-second, and it was awful.” State officials said rescue teams were searching for people reported missing in Lee and Cumberland counties. “There is still a lot we don’t know tonight as we begin recovering from the most severe, widespread tornadoes we have seen since the mid-1980s,” Doug Hoell, state emergency management director, told reporters at a news conference. The Observer said one twister roared through Sanford, producing a mile-long path of destruction. Roofs were torn off a Lowe’s building center in Sanford and off the student center at Shaw University inRaleigh

“With dormitory rooms damaged and the Willie E. Gary Student Center — which houses the university’s cafeteria — devastated, Shaw moved quickly to provide food and shelter to all students affected by the storm,” the University said in a release. The student center sustained the brunt of the damage, with a hole being ripped in the roof. The Red Cross opened a shelter at Southeast Raleigh High School, which will house many of the displaced students.

Virginia State University Board approves tuition, fee increase #BuzzKiller

Virginia State University’s Board of Visitors has approved tuition and fee increases for the 2011-12 academic year. Tuition and mandatory fees for in-state, undergraduate students will be $7,090, up 7.9 percent from last year. The corresponding cost for non-resident, undergraduates will be $15,988, a 5.6 percent increase. In fiscal year 2011, VSU’s tuition and fees were the second lowest among Virginia’s 15 senior, public institutions of higher education.

Basic room and board rates for all students increase by $728, or 8.9 percent. The total cost of attending VSU in 2011-2012 will be $15,970 for in-state, undergraduates (including room and board) and $24,868 for non-resident undergraduates. The total cost for graduate students residing on campus is $17,254 for in-state and $25,822 for non-resident. Vice President for Administration and Finance David Meadows said this year’s tuition and fee increases were impacted by a continued loss of state funds, as well as a need to continue to provide improvements in the areas of technology infrastructure, academic faculty and recruitment processes. Meadows noted that “the University was able to minimize tuition and fee increases through a collective effort to reduce expenses and improve operational efficiencies.”

Continuing a policy established several years ago, a portion of the tuition paid by students will continue to be set aside to provide financial assistance.

Every year since 1989, the Daily Press has named a Citizen of the Year, an individual or group that has made an exceptional contribution to the community. Harvey was honored for his exceptional service and dedication to Hampton University and the community.

It was never inevitable that Hampton University would open a sophisticated cancer treatment facility. Almost all the other proton centers in the United States are affiliated with high-profile research universities, medical schools or teaching hospitals. But in 2010, the freestanding Hampton University Proton Therapy Institute switched on its cyclotron, opened its doors and began offering treatment – and hope – to people with cancer.

In recognition of that achievement, the capstone of more than three decades of contributions to the local, state and national communities, the Daily Press honors HU President Dr. William R. Harvey as its Citizen of the Year for 2010.

Howard University ResFest Step Show

The ResFest Step show is the most highly anticipated event in the spring semester and this year it didn’t disappoint! All the main dorms from Howard University (Quad, Drew, Annex, Carver, etc.) came to Cramton Auditorium to rep their dorm and to support their step team.

For the opening act, the Eleanor Roosevelt high school step team came out to perform. They surprised everyone in the auditorium by giving us an outstanding performance with fast pace stepping and stunts.

The Annex started the show off well along with the Quad, Slowe, Meridian, Carver and Drew Hall.

Cook Hall, who had been missing from the Step Show for two years, finally came back to perform with their “Assassin’s Creed” theme

Howard University Stroll Off

All the major dorms at Howard University (Quad, Drew, Annex, MDOT, Slowe & Towers) went against each other in the ResFest Dance competition 2011 with the theme, ”Night at the Mirage”. The event was hosted by the “Welcome to Howard” stars, Chase B. and Jae Murphy. Music was provided by DJ Big Will.

After the first round, Drew, Slowe, Annex and Quad made it to the semi finals. The brothers from Drew Hall decided to have a dance battle with Annex while Slowe takes on the Quad.

During this round, The Quad and Annex survived the dance battle to move on to the finals. The two losing teams (Slowe and Drew) had a dance battle to see who will get third place. In the end, Drew came out with the win and even showed great sportsmanship by shaking hands with Slowe.

If you’re very successful as a woman, student, or a mom there is many bags that come along with it. You have baby bags, suit cases, book bags, and as for me my makeup kit accompanies me everywhere.It tends to weigh me down with all it’s carryings. When I read various types of literature, I find myself getting lost in the black words that are printed on the white paper. Reading allows me to escape into another world and keeps me updated with past and current news. When I engage into the writer’s expressive words it improves my pronunciation and helps with vocabulary and spelling. Although this is the satisfaction I get when I read, majority of my peers will admit that reading does not play a significant role in their lives.

This leads me to ask, why does some African American college students abandon the art of reading? Does the reason solely depend on students not being able to comprehend what they are reading or students not finding enjoyment in the literature they select? Students have their own personal reasons why they do not read; in my opinion they are refusing to expose themselves to different types of writing.

Bowie State University senior, Nkosi Dickerson believes, “African American college students may get bored with reading material that does not pertain to them.” In most instances, students prefer not to read, due to the fact that some writings illustrate a cultural and racial unfairness. Generally, these students would rather read literature that they can identify themselves with, this includes urban novels, Essence and Ebony magazine or information that is focus on the black community. In most cases, if literature does not grab the attention of students, they will quickly become uninterested and stop reading.

College students should want to explode different genres of writing when they open the papers of novels, newspapers and magazines. I understand that urban novels are popular among our generation; however these novels are only good for entertaining the mind and not informing it. Students should encourage themselves to read material that has substance and is beneficial to them in life. Students should consider reading more about the financial system, health issues, theories of traditional and non-traditional philosophers, past and present world history and more. Literature should challenge student’s intellect and allow them to obtain new information in this world of endless reading.
