Saint Augustine’s College #1 in Black College Division 2 Poll

By John Kamara

The defending CIAA baseball champions from Saint Augustine’s College are on fire once again as they prepare for this year’s CIAA Baseball Tournament April 21st through the 23rd at Virginia State University in Petersburg, VA. This week the Falcons from Raleigh, NC are first in the Black College Baseball Poll, eighth in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Atlantic Region poll, and the only CIAA school ranked in the region. They earned the rankings with a 32-15 overall record and a 22-4 CIAA mark, which tops the league. This has also been a good week for the Falcons’ standout shortstop Rashad Ingram  from Savannah. GA.  He was awarded the Black College Player of the Week for the second time this year. Ingram led the Falcons to a 3-1 record last week. He drove in five runs on six hits, including a triple and home run. Ingram also scored five runs and was 5-for-6 in stolen base attempts. Ingram is the leader in stolen bases in Division 2. This is a veteran team with seven seniors who look to repeat the CIAA Championship.  Last year they won after defeating the Virginia State Trojans 6-3 in the championship game, particularly sweet after losing to them in the previous two years. Stay tuned for the CIAA Spring Sports Festival April 2123, as all CIAA baseball participating schools will compete for the CIAA championship. Other sports will be participating in this event as well.

Flatforms vs. Platforms

By Khadijah Williams “Queenoftheglam”

The platform wave dates back before the 1970’s. They still remain an all around hit! Now there’s a “flatform” YES you read it right, a flatform. This new sensation is all the rave and is a popular trend, says all the top magazine publications. As for myself, I’m not sure how I feel about them but it has stolen the show! It can’t compare to a platform but it’s definitely a competitor, let top editors tell it. I wonder if we’ll catch any ladies strutting across the yard to class in these?! My main concern with any shoe is comfort. I don’t know about you ladies but me and platforms mix because they give you both height and comfort! It’s truly the best of both worlds. On the other hand flat shoes tend not be the most comfortable because the lack of arch. I haven’t personally tried on a flatform but I am a skeptic of them.
Will they hurt, be narrow or wide enough?
Only the daring girl could try this new phenomenon out for herself.
Will that daring diva be you? What’s your personal take on these sensational flatforms?
All in all, they’re a modern take on an age-old classic! I could see these being a huge hit in for the risk takers. It reminds me of an espadrille something you’d catch someone on a nice summer day wearing with a quirky spend of course! YOU be the judge.

A Cupcake a Day, Keeps the Doctor Away?

Articulate Moment by April C. Thornton: We are attentive to our hectic school schedule, but we neglect to provide the proper nourishment for our bodies.

A Cupcake a Day, Keeps the Doctor Away?

By: April C. Thornton

Bowie State University, senior Robyn Green has always made her studies a top priority, while putting her unhealthy eating habits on the backburner. Just like any other college student, Green’s school schedule keeps her life busy. Her eating habits consist of skipping breakfast and consuming fast food or items out of the vending machine in-between her classes and studies. It is often difficult to eat well with little time and even less money. Just like Green, majority of African American college students have extremely unhealthy eating habits.

We are attentive to our hectic school schedule, but we neglect to provide the proper nourishment for our bodies. Between studying for upcoming exams and continuous involvement in extracurricular activities, our food consumption may consist of a bag of Doritos with a Hawaiian Punch or a greasy burger from McDonalds. We invest endless amount of money in our unhealthy cravings. Since junk food is convenient and seemingly inexpensive, we find ourselves indulging in junk food heaven even more. For now we are content on how well we perform in school and in life, but we are ignoring the consequences that come with poor eating habits.

Have you taken a glimpse at the African American community lately? Not only are we struggling with obesity, but diseases such as Diabetes, Pulmonary Hypertension, High Cholesterol and Coronary Heart Disease are prevalent in our community. People in the community refuse to believe we are slowly killing ourselves with the very foods we grew up eating, ‘Soul Food.’ You know! Every Sunday the family would gather around the table and eat the recipes that have been passed down from generations. We fill our plates with mixed collard greens, honey baked ham, macaroni and cheese, fat back and the sweetest ice tea. The traditionally preparation of soul food meals are high in fat, sodium, calories and cholesterol. Even though soul food tastes so delightful, it is unhealthy and increases health issues in the black community.

There are several alternatives students can use to improve our unhealthy eating habits, such as substituting and minimizing fat, salt, sugar, oil and cholesterol in our diet. Doctor’s constantly stress the importance of eating three meals a day and majority of students still skip the first meal. Since we are always in motion, we can simply grab a granola bar, fruit, yogurt or sit down and enjoy a bowl of cereal for breakfast. Remember breakfast provides energy that can increase concentration level and help students have a productive morning. In-between classes we can eat a healthy snack, such as no trans-fat kettle brand potato chips, almonds or carrots to fill that void of hunger. When we feel like going on a fast food venture, try Panera Bread, Noddle’s and Company and other restaurants that have healthy dishes on their menu. We do not have to change the way we eat completely, but we can improve or daily intake.

Tyrese Gibson at Howard University Giving Advice About Relationships

Tyrese Gibson was at Howard Wednesday promoting his new book “How to Get out Of Your Own Way”. Also giving information and advice on relationships.  His words were very powerful and sat well with the students of Howard University.  During a discussing about the different topics of his book with the host and moderator, Jeff Johnson, Gibson goes into detail about the problems people go through in personal relationships.

“During the discussion, Gibson gave brazen advice to the young women and men of The Mecca on family relationships, personal relationships, sex and children.  The R&B crooner nearly incited a riot when stating that to most men, sex is like changing shoes and cheating is almost always a part of the picture. Before losing his many fans in Cramton last night, he clarified by stating that there’re still men in the world that are faithful”

FAMU to Offer Distant Learning Courses in August

FAMU to Offer Distant Learning Courses in August

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.— Today, Florida A&M University (FAMU) Board of Trustees unanimously approved the one-year contract with the Tom Joyner Online Education (TJOE) for its distance-learning program.

The online program will offer master’s degrees in nursing, public health and business.  These programs will commence in August 2011 and university officials are expecting 271 students during the first year of the program. The courses will be hosted on www.hbcusonline.com.

“The need for distance education programs is first and foremost because of student demand, said Director for Instructional Technology Franzetta D. Fitz. “Many students are seeking educational opportunities outside of the traditional campus environment in order to qualify for advancement in their careers while continuing to fulfill their daily obligations.  An online distance education program allows FAMU to compete with other institutions to provide the same quality of education online that our traditional students receive.  In addition, it allows us to increase our global presence as a 21st century, state-of-the-art institution.”

The three graduate programs were selected as the pilot programs because they are in high demand. According to Fitz, the university plans to start with these graduate programs as the university builds its infrastructure to prepare to offer more online degree programs.

“Once we launch these online programs, we will move to the second phase of our plan which is to offer more graduate degree programs as well as undergraduate degree completions,” said Fitz. “The online degree completions program will initially be developed for previous FAMU students who have stopped out of school for various reasons to have the opportunity to complete their degrees online.”

Over the past two years, FAMU has created a comprehensive distance education program. The university solicited information from companies that could provide the technological infrastructure, costs and marketing support necessary for the successful delivery of online degree programs. TJOE was the most qualified company to take on the task.

FAMU will be provided with marketing and recruitment assistance, student enrollment services, non-academic student support, consulting services and academic program development by TJOE.

TJOE will provide 50 hours per year of consulting assistance during the Term of the Agreement to the university, in an effort to better prepare students for success with distance education programs.  These consulting services include technology support, academic program and faculty management, academic distance education quality control, and administrative and student support issues.

For admission requirements or further information, contact Franzetta D. Fitz in the Office of Instructional Technology at (850) 599-3460 or by email at oit@famu.edu.

Virginia State Opens New Dining and Event Center

The dining hall is part of VSU’s 20/20 master plan to increase enrollment to 10,000 students.

ETTRICK – Students at Virginia State University have a new state-of-the-art dining hall. The $7 million Gateway Dining Event Center will not only accommodate 1,250 students and staff, but also serves as a venue for both university and public events.

“This is a great day for VSU,” said University President Dr. Keith Miller at yesterday’s ribbon cutting. “We want to be on the leading edge with everything that we do, and this new facility is part of that effect,” he said. Miller added that the new dining hall is part of the school’s continuing improvement efforts.

The new facility was built from the ground up. Construction started in July 2010, and patrons dine on two floors with a combined size of 40,500 square foot. The downstairs rooms accommodate 600 guests, while the upstairs has room for 650.

“The dining hall is part of VSU’s 20/20 master plan to increase enrollment to 10,000 students,” said John Griffin, resident district manager with Thompson hospitality, the company that operates all catering facilities on campus. “With more students, we need more facilities, and we need to build them before the new students come here,” Griffin said.

The new dining hall is not only open to students, but also to the general public. “Anyone can come eat here,” Griffin said. “We are also dedicated to serve trendy foods and healthy choices with a low fat content and low sodium,” Griffin said. “We are making students eat healthier and they don’t even know it,” Griffin said.

Upstairs rooms and lounges can also be rented out for corporate and private events like weddings and conferences

Howard Vs. Morgan State University Spring Fashion Show Recap

Both of the fashion shows were great but on two different scales. It’s almost like comparing street fashion (howard) to high fashion (Morgan), both are appreciated but in their own realms.

HU vs MSU Fashion Show Recap

Photo & Video by Travis White

Both of the fashion shows were great but on two different scales. It’s almost like comparing street fashion to high fashion, both are appreciated but in their own realms.

(Howard Univ) One of my favorite HBCU owns accessory line,AKEYNO.

The african print head pieces added a touch of originality.

Howard University’s spring fashion show was entitled “Envy, A Sinful Desire”. I appreciated how Howard used a lot of Howard’s own designers like LaVita clothing, Be You designs, and of course Howard paraphernalia! The fashion show definitely showcased an HBCU experience with the crowd dancing during intermission, Fraternities and Sororities strolling, and other organizations taking group photos. It reminded me once again why I chose an HBCU!

(Morgan State Univ) Jean Jumpers are back! The eyewear really set this look off.

Morgan State University’s fashion show was a completely different vibe. They accomplished their goal of putting on a high fashion couture show. The way they utilized the whole showroom as their runway was brilliant. They made sure everyone is the house felt like they were VIP. They paid tribute to different magazines such as GQ, Vanity Fair, and Vogue. That is exactly how they modeled their show, as if they were in NYC’s fashion week. The diversity of the clothing was amazing. They showcased everything from creative one piece bathing suites to couture upscale dresses!

MSU Cheer Bears Earn National Bid

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Morgan State University Cheer Bears are national qualifiers for the inaugural College STUNT National Championship on Saturday, April 9th at the Ocean Center Arena in Daytona Beach, Florida.

Morgan State earned an At-Large Bid for the nationals as a result of finishing as the Mid Atlantic Region Runner Up to North Carolina StateMorgan State Bear

The Cheer Bears, who are the reigning 2011 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Champs, have made tremendous strides during their first STUNT season and have propelled to the top of the national scene under the direction of head coach Theresa Gibson.

“Making it to NCA nationals for STUNT was monumental in highlighting the athleticism of our cheer team athletes,” said Gibson.  “We are participating in a history making event and that adds some excitement and anxiety to the mix.”

“With the strong possibility of this becoming an official NCAA sport, this opportunity will assist in opening up additional scholarship opportunities for female athletes and help decrease the gap between the amount of male athletes vs. female athletes at Morgan and other institutions of higher learning.”

MSU will be competing with the following teams at the inaugural College STUNT National Championship:

•       Cal Poly State University – West Region Winner

•       Framingham State University – Northeast Region Winner & Division II Winner
